Types of EV Charging

AC Charging

AC Charging

AC Charging

AC (alternating current) charging varies in speeds from 2.4Kw (10amp power point) to 22Kw (32A three-phase).

Ideally suited for locations where time isn't the pressing factor, ideally for locations where vehicles regularly stay for over 1 hour. eg: Home, work, tourist destinations, parks, beaches, hotels, cinemas, larger shopping centres.

Pros

AC Charging

AC Charging

Cheaper to install generally connecting to existing power supply.

Better for vehicle battery life.

Increases dwell time for businesses.

Don't need to rush out to disconnect vehicle.

Compatible with every EV/PHEV on the market.

Cons

AC Charging

DC Fast Charging

Slower charging rates make units unsuitable for locations where customers want to just 'get in and out again'.

DC Fast Charging

DC Fast Charging

DC Fast Charging

DC Fast charging uses direct current charging. Charging rates between 50Kw and 150Kw.

Ideally suited for locations where customers dwell is 30mins to 1 hour. Shopping centres, cafes, restaurants, small to large shopping centres, grocery shops.

Pros

DC Fast Charging

Pros

Cheaper to install than Ultra-rapid.

Gives customers flexibility if they aren't staying for a long period.

Can connect to the majority of EVs and some PHEVs (subject to connector type).

Provides a good charge rate for people who want to shop and go.

Cons

DC Fast Charging

Pros

More expensive to install due to specialist DC equipment.

Can charge too fast for certain locations causing customers to head to their vehicles sooner (due to cost most units will charge idle time requiring the customer to move the vehicle).

Requires vehicles to be suitably equipped with correct port (Type 2 CCS or CHADeMO).

High speed charging can increase battery degradation when used regularly.

DC Ultra-rapid Charging

DC Ultra-rapid Charging

DC Ultra-rapid Charging

DC Ultra-rapid Charging uses direct current charging. Charging rates above 150Kw to 375Kw.

Ideally suited for locations where time is of the essence, highways, traveller rest sites, fast food rest stops (near highways etc).

Pros

DC Ultra-rapid Charging

DC Ultra-rapid Charging

Super fast charging for people that want to charge up and get moving again.

Can service a larger number of vehicles per day.

Cons

DC Ultra-rapid Charging

Cons

Most EVs can't handle charging rates this high (units will throttle to lower speeds).

Increased installation costs and power requirements.

Limited to Type 2 CCS charging, generally is installed alongside a 50Kw unit to cater for all vehicles.

High speed charging can increase battery degradation when used regularly.
